Class Summary - As part of the mental and emotional health unit, 6th grade students will be watching ‘Rudy’. This movie is rated PG and the justification for the Movie Rudy based on the following stated National Health Education Standards for Mental and Emotional Health. The movie Rudy will be followed by daily discussion involving these topics and journal entries focusing on the aspects of health related to the goal setting standard. The section of the movie that we watched today covered that Rudy was ridiculed for his dream. His teachers said that he wasn’t smart enough and his dad said he’d never make it, but his best friend truly believed in him. When Pete was killed in a factory accident, Rudy stated his goal and started to set forth an action plan to achieve that goal. He started saving money, he went to Notre Dame and he started talking to someone about getting admitted. Someone at the university said they could start him at the local community college and they could go from there. Rudy had started classes at the community college to get his grades up to possibly get into Notre Dame. This is where he meets another person who is a help in achieving his dream of playing football for Notre Dame. Rudy meets Dbob who recognizes that Rudy might be dyslexic and need extra help reading. He also meets up with the field janitor who helps Rudy out by giving him a job on the football field and allows Rudy to stay in the janitor’s office to sleep because Rudy doesn’t have enough money to find a place to stay. Rudy works really hard on his grades and working out and his job.
Homework - Students should complete reflection questions #1-7 on their journal packets.
Objectives - Along with touching on standards 1, 4, 5, 7 and 8, the main focus on the discussion related to Rudy will be on standard 6 which is the goal setting standard in the Mental and Emotional Health category.
