Class Summary - Today we discussed the parts of a muscle fiber. We discussed how sarco and myo mean muscle. Many of the organelles that we are familiar with have different names in the muscle fiber like sarcoplasm / cytoplasm, sarcoplasmic reticulum / endoplasmic reticulum, sarcolemma / plasma membrane. We also talked about a muscle breaks down to a muscle fascicle, a muscle fascicle breaks down to a muscle fiber, a muscle fiber breaks down to a myofibril that breaks down to a sarcomere. Some new things with muscle fibers are the T (transverse) system or T- tubules that expand the sarcoplasmic reticulum and stores Ca+2 ions needed for contraction. Important part of a sarcomere are the zline, thin filaments, thick filaments, titin. With any leftover time, students should go here: www.goldiesroom.org/Shockwave_Pages/061--Muscle%20Contraction.htm Students ended class with a coloring of the sarcomere.
Homework - Sarcomere Coloring WS
Objectives - Students will name the components of a skeletal muscle fiber.
