Class Summary - We started out class with a quiz on 3.2 in the textbook. Today students were introduced to a cell project. Students will have today and tomorrow to work on the project. Students will be handed out a grading rubric. The idea is to make a comparison of the organelles in the cell to a theme that they get to pick. We looked at an example of a theme of “a cell compared to Santa’s workshop”. The elves were the ribosomes because they were the workers and the fire was the mitochondria because it gave energy in the form of heat etc. No student can have the same theme so we brainstormed some themes. Prezi is a free online program that is really neat and a fun way to do this project otherwise google presentation can be used. Here is a prezi example using a plant cell (student examples should be animal cells). http://prezi.com/vuvsjp3lt0jz/cell-analogy/ Here is the link for the blank cell suggested: hermansonhbiology.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/04_04aanimalcell-u.jpg 1. Each slide should have a picture of animal cell with organelles. 2. Each slide then will label and focus on one organelle. The slide should indicate the organelle on the cell picture and then create an analogy matching the theme for each organelle. Each slide should explain the connection for the analogy. This should be done for EACH ORGANELLE (there are 13 listed so at least 13 slides). There must be a picture accompanying the analogy for their particular theme. Make sure to stick to your theme. The analogy should relate back to the function of the organelle. For EXAMPLE: "This arrow is pointing to the ribosomes in the animal cell. In Santa’s Workshop, the elves make the toys, the toys in the workshop are the proteins in a cell because they are assembled by the elves/ribosomes. In a cell, ribosomes make proteins just like toys are made by elves. Student should use this as a template for what I am looking for. Notice the complete sentences ;-) 3. The title should read “A Cell is like a {insert your theme}” 4. Each slide includes the animal cell with organelle labeled, a picture for the analogy and a clear description of the analogy and function of the organelle. 5. This should be somewhat fun…you should make your project your own. You should use your own words but make sure to put in vocabulary that the text and our discussion uses (sound intelligent and complete in descriptions).
Homework - Students should start working on the cell project which is due on Friday. (They will have today and tomorrow as work days on the project). Tomorrow is also the quiz on organelles.
Objectives - Students will use analogies to understand the functions of organelles.
