Class Summary - Today we talked about the causes and symptoms of depression. We brainstormed what we thought depression actually was. We learned that depression is very different than normal sadness. It is sadness and hopelessness that lasts almost every day for months. We looked at brain scans of people with depression and 'normal' brains. We saw that there was less brain activity in a brain of someone with depression. We discussed that depression is real and not just someone's inability to think positive. It is not a willpower thing. We discussed normal sadness and abnormal sadness. We discussed signs and symptoms of depression and practiced writing a script to our guidance counselor about a friend that may need help. We talked about the anonymous reporting box, talking to parents and teachers if we feel concerned about ourselves or others. We talked about treatment of depression being as simple as changing diet or behaviors to talking to a therapist or even medication. We then discussed ideas of why teenagers might be depressed.
