Class Summary - Today we talked about joints and movement terms. We talked about fibrous joints that are immovable and include teeth articulating in tooth sockets and cranial sutures. We also talked about cartilaginous joints like the costal cartilage, pubic symphysis and intervertebral disks. Cartilaginous joints allow for some movement but not a lot. Synovial joints are the most well known. They occur where two bones are separated by a joint cavity. They have a synovial membrane that lubricates the joint with synovial fluid to reduce friction. The types of synovial joints are saddle, ball and socket, pivot, hinge, gliding and condyloid joints. We also discussed movement terms including flexion, extension, adduction, abduction, circumduction, rotation, supination, pronation, inversion, eversion, elevation and depression. Flashcards are in study blue. The rest of the time was used to study for the test.
Homework - The Skeletal System Test is on Friday.
Objectives - Students will explain how joints are classified and give examples of each type of joint. Students will list the types of movements that occur at synovial joints.
