Class Summary - We started out class today with a quiz on organelle's function. Students will get today as a work day for their cell project. Their job is to compare the cell and its organelles to a theme of your choice. I used the examples of comparing the cell to Santa’s Workshop and also comparing the cell to the US Open. (I reminded the students that I have googled and researched hours worth of internet examples. They should come up with your own idea and do not plagiarize. However, they should feel free to use the internet to spark some ideas for your own individualized project). See http://www.glogster.com/irenewallen/cell-analogy-project-irene-wallen-1st-period/g-6lsrfle9v3gs6lc65j0hja0 for the full santa’s workshop example (use scroll tools to see entire descriptions). Projects are due on Friday. 1. Each slide should have a picture of animal cell with organelles. 2. Each slide then will label and focus on one organelle. The slide should indicate the organelle on the cell picture and then create an analogy matching the theme for each organelle. Each slide should explain the connection for the analogy. This should be done for EACH ORGANELLE (there are 13 listed so at least 13 slides). There must be a picture accompanying the analogy for their particular theme. Make sure to stick to your theme. The analogy should relate back to the function of the organelle. For EXAMPLE: "This arrow is pointing to the ribosomes in the animal cell. In Santa’s Workshop, the elves make the toys, the toys in the workshop are the proteins in a cell because they are assembled by the elves/ribosomes. In a cell, ribosomes make proteins just like toys are made by elves. Student should use this as a template for what I am looking for. Notice the complete sentences ;-) 3. The title should read “A Cell is like a {insert your theme}” 4. Each slide includes the animal cell with organelle labeled, a picture for the analogy and a clear description of the analogy and function of the organelle. 5. This should be somewhat fun…you should make your project your own. You should use your own words but make sure to put in vocabulary that the text and our discussion uses (sound intelligent and complete in descriptions).
Homework - Cell Project Due Friday (Today is the last work day)
Objectives - Students will make analogies of the cell to something familiar to them.
