Class Summary - Today we talked about the basics of the mechanisms of breathing. We talked about inspiration and expiration. Inspiration is active and requires contraction of the intercostals and diaphragm. Expiration is passive unless its forced like if we blow out a candle or sing. The lungs work like a vaccuum. When volume of the lungs increases the pressure decreases allowing air into the lungs. When volume of the lungs decreases the pressure increases allowing air to leave the lungs. We also reviewed some of the basic anatomy.
