Class Summary - Today we introduced the cell. We discussed what will be covered in chapter 3 (organelles, mitosis, protein synthesis etc.). We discuss the organization of the cells and the purpose of all of the organelles. We talked about the plasma membrane (selectively permeable allowing things in and out), the cytoplasm (cytoskeleton - giving structure and housing organelles in the cell), and the nucleus and nucleolus (hold genetic information. We discussed the ER (transport of substances), both rough and smooth, ribosomes (protein synthesis), vacuoles (stores items until peroxisomes can get to them), lysosomes (has digestive enzymes to break down substances), golgi apparatus (packages and modifies), mitochondria (creates ATP), peroxisomes (break down toxins and fats in the cells), flagella and cilia (movement of the cell), and centrioles (used for cell replication). We will discuss each organelle’s anatomy and physiology. This information should all be a review from biology. Then students were assigned an introductory worksheet including a cell city analogy, paraphrasing the function of the organelles and also color coding a cell diagram. These will be due on Monday of next week.
Homework - Worksheets (cell city, paraphrase function and color coding the cell) due on Monday. Quiz on the reading on page 48-50 on Tuesday. Organelle quiz on Wednesday.
Objectives - Students will locate and state the function of cell organelles.
