Class Summary - Today students took a quiz on checking a responsive person and SAMPLE. Today we talked about what to do if the victim is unconscious. We also practiced the steps on a manikin. These are the steps that should be taken for an unconscious adult and child and infant: 1. Check the Scene 2. Shout ' are you ok' or the person's name if you know it. Tap the person if they don't respond to noise. (Shoulder for adult and child / foot for infant) 3. Look for signs of breathing 4a. If they are responsive, continue with SAMPLE 4b. If they are responding and breathing, but not fully awake, call 911 and proceed with SAMPLE from bystanders, conduct a head-to toe check, and roll the person onto their side if there is no signs of injury 4c. If they are unresponsive and not breathing send someone to call 911, get an AED, and begin CPR Then we started talking about cardiac arrest and heart attack. We explained that cardiac arrest is when the heart stops breathing or beats to ineffectively to circulate blood to the brain and other vital organs. A heart attack is a 'death' of heart tissue and can lead to a cardiac arrest.
