Summary - We started out class discussing risk factors. A risk factor is something that would put someone at a greater risk of a health effect. For instance, having pale skin is a risk factor for skin cancer, speeding is a risk factor for injuries in an accident etc. Many students often get confused thinking the result is the risk factor but that is not the case. Then, in order to understand why we focus on the topics that we do, students were asked to look at the 2017 results of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey for high school students in Wisconsin. (The YRBS is done every 2 years but there is no 2015 data because the amount of students that reported data was so low resulting in unreliable data.) Students were to look at the data to fill out a worksheet. Students should start to think about why we learn what we learn in health class. Students should analyze influences as to why changes have taken place in Wisconsin youth behaviors. Students can use the completed worksheet to guide their answers to test questions. We corrected the assignment at the end of class.
Homework - YRBS Worksheet (Complete as much as you can in class), Test tomorrow
Objectives - Students will accurately define the term 'risk factor' in their own words (Standard 1 Core Concepts)
Students will discuss from examples how adjustments can be made even if a risk factors is something that they cannot control (Standard 7 Self Management)
Students will use Wisconsin YRBS data to analyze influences on health related behaviors (Standard 2 Analyzing Influences AND Standard 3 Accessing Information)
