Class Summary - We started out class with a short quiz on bone classification. Then we talked about the osteon. Compact bone is made up of a series of osteons. Each osteon has 'rings' called lamellae. Inside the lamellae are lacunae that house the bone cells 'osteocytes'. The osteocytes are connected by canaliculi. The central canal houses veins, arteries, nerves and lymphatic tissue. We then reviewed the function of the skeletal system and the main parts of long bones. We reviewed the difference between compact and spongy bone and their location on long bones. Then we started talking about bone growth and repair. We talked about four cells needed for growth and repair (osteocytes, osteoprogenitor cells, osteoblasts and osteoclasts). We talked about intramembranous ossification and endochondral ossification (most bones). We talked about the 4 steps of bone repair; hematoma, fibrocartilaginous callus, bony callus, and remodeling. We looked at open and closed fractures, spiral fractures, impact fractures and open and closed reduction.
Homework - Quiz tomorrow on long bone anatomy, bone classification and osteons
Objectives - Students will know the anatomy of an osteon. Students will understand the processes behind bone growth and repair. Quiz on osteon, long bone anatomy and review of classification of bones tomorrow.
