Class Summary - Today we talked about the non-energy supplying nutrients. Fill in the blank notes are attached. We names all 6 nutrients and defined 'nutrient'. 1. Water - 50-75% of our bodies is water. We need 8, 8oz glasses of water. Water gives us no energy. Even a 2% drop in body water has physical consequences. 2. Vitamins - Getting our vitamins from food is better than in pill form. There are two categories of vitamins; water soluble and fat soluble. We need to get water soluble vitamins regularly because we cannot store them for later like we can fat soluble vitamins. 3. Minerals - We talked about 1 major mineral iron (good sources: Red meat, kidney beans and spinach, if we dont' get enough we worry about anemia) and we will get to the other 3 tomorrow.Today we finished talking about 3 minerals and foods that are rich in these nutrients and what happens if we don't get enough; Calcium (milk products, osteoporosis), Potassium (bananas and potatoes, cramping), Sodium (salt and packaged products, hypertention - too much and goiter - not enough which is usually not american's problem.
