Class Summary - Today we went a little bit deeper into what violence actually is. We covered some basic vocabulary and talked about costs of violence to society, the victim and the assailant. We talked about risk factors for violence. Today we finished up the violence in schools lecture by talking about prejudice, discrimination, hazing and hate crimes. We talked about what each of these is and gave examples of the violence. We talked about how ‘teasing’ is a fine line and we need to understand how dangerous it can be. We talked about how kids often laugh even if they think it is wrong or it hurts them. We emphasized advocacy and standing up for what is right. Today we addressed the vocabulary hate violence, prejudice, discrimination and stereotypes. We looked at a 'what would you do' video and I asked students to visualize what they would do in a situation where someone was being treated unfairly. Today we talked about the issue of fighting. We talked about what bystanders and peacemakers can do to stop or prevent fighting. We talked about the main reasons for fighting and how we can mediate in a conflict.

Objectives - Students will know our school policy on issues like bullying and sexual harassment. Students will identify behaviors of sexual harassment and hazing. Students will advocate for themselves on issues of violence.
