Class Summary - Today we finished up Erik Erikson's stages of personality development. We then went on to talk about self esteem. Today we lectured about self esteem. We talked about how self esteem usually changes during certain periods of our lives. We tend to start out with a fairly high self esteem. Once we start attending school it drops as we start to compare ourselves to others and receive criticism of our works from teachers, peers and parents. During adolescence teens tend to have a lower self esteem as they make unrealistic expectations of their appearance. During adulthood, self esteem tends to be fairly high as adults start to achieve goals that they had set for themselves. Older adults tend to have a lower self esteem as their roles in society are limited and their health starts to fail. We discussed ways to improve our self esteem like positive self talk and volunteering.
