Class Summary - Then we discussed the nutrient 'fat'. We know that fat has 9 calories per gram and is the most energy dense nutrient there is. We know that fat should also be 30% of the calories that we eat. We talked about the two categories of fat; saturated and unsaturated. Saturated fats are solid at room temperature and are primarily animal products. We want to limit these fats as these are the artery clogging fats. Unsaturated fats are healthy fats (as long as they are not changed during the frying process to trans fats). We get unsaturated fats from plant products and they are primarily liquid at room temperature. We talked about the difference between weight and body composition and how to measure composition. We talked about how weight is not an accurate depiction of what health is. We learned that 3,500 calories is a pound of fat but people should not lose more than 1-2 pounds (or gain 1-2 pounds per week) because it is hard on the hear to gain / lose more than that.
Homework - The test on nutrients is scheduled for Wednesday / Thursday. Attached is a study guide.
