Class Summary - Today we started a lecture about the digestive system using a Mimio presentation. There will be a 'quiz' on the digestive system next class period. Students should be able to trace the path of food from in to out using names of body parts. They should also know basic functions of the body parts. We talk about the first step being chewing and that the strongest substance in our body, enamel, protects our teeth (and the effect of acidity on enamel - we watched a clip on an eggshell in coke). We talk about saliva, and swallowing and how the tongue balls up our food and pushes it to the back of our mouths. epiglottis, uvula and esophagus. We continue to talk about swallowing all the way through waste excretion. We watched a clip of someone swallowing a recording device until that device got into the stomach. We discuss the pharynx being a fancy word for throat, the uvula triggering gag reflex, the epiglottis preventing air into stomach and food into lungs, the esophagus using muscles to push down the food to the stomach with HCL that breaks up the food. We talk about the small intestine sucking up nutrients and the large intestines sucking up water. Order of food in to food out: Mouth (teeth grind up food) Tongue Uvula Pharynx Esophagus Stomach Small Intestine Large Intestine Anus
