Class Summary - The lecture today covers homeostasis and that it is the body’s desire to maintain its internal environment. We talked about homeostasis and addictions. We also discussed negative and positive feedback and their impact on the body. Negative feedback is a lot more common because of our body’s need for homeostasis (thermoregulation, blood glucose level, blood pressure etc.). Positive feedback is rarer in biology but does exist (breastfeeding, birthing, immune system). Positive feedback is mostly quick and when a fast response is needed. When homeostasis fails we get disease. We talked about diabetes in relation to negative feedback and disease. We also defined local disease which is when a disease affects specifically one area of the body and also systemic disease which affects multiple parts of the body. An example would be strep, which is localized in the tonsils but then if left untreated, it becomes a systemic disease of rheumatic fever. Also, we discussed acute vs. chronic disease (short vs. longterm).
Homework: Quiz on body regions and cavities TOMORROW (Study for Tuesay's Test)
Objectives: Students will identify positive and negative feedback. Students will review and use body region terminology.
