Class Summary - Today we finished the anatomy of the respiratory system. We started out addressing the trachea which has cartilaginous C-shaped rings that create structure and allow the esophagus to expand when we swallow. We talked about the bronchial tree. Primary bronchi split the trachea to move air to each lung. Primary bronchi split into secondary bronchi (3 for each lobe of right lung and two for the 2 lobes of the left lung - less lobes to accommodate the heart. The secondary bronchi split into the tertiary bronchi and then the bronchioles. The alveoli and their corresponding blood vessels make up the lung. The membrane in between the alveoli and the capillaries is called the respiratory membrane and it is where gas exchange happens.
