Class Summary - Today we discussed sexually transmitted infections. We watched a short video from amaze.org that explained STI/STDs (see below). We discussed that there are two categories of STIs; bacterial and viral. Bacterial infections can be treated and cured. Viral infections can be treated but not cured. We discussed that some STIs don't have symptoms so if someone is sexually active they should get tested even if there are no symptoms. We talked specifically about HIV and AIDS in class. Then students were to go to https://www.cdc.gov/std/and complete a webquest which is attached bellow. The fact sheets review that abstinence is the only 100% effective way to prevent STIs but if someone is sexually active the best way to prevent STIs is to limit sexual partners and to use a latex condom. The bacterial infections that we covered were; bacterial vaginosis chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis. The viral infections that we discussed were; HPV and Herpes. HIV / AIDS was covered in class lecture.
