Class Summary - Today in class we talked about how students can counteract the effects of fight or flight that our body puts us through. We measured out 'Orbeez' to soak overnight so we can make sensory stress balls. Then, we did an activity called Progressive Muscle Relaxation. The idea behind PMR is that because stress makes us tighten our muscles, through tensing and relaxation, we can actually leave our body in a more relaxed state. After PMR, we did a little mental imagery activity where we imagined ourselves at a beach. This imaginary escape is helpful even before a test to control our breathing and get ourselves relaxed and refocused. We also watched some funny videos to release endorphins and also some pet videos (because we discussed that playing or petting an animal can reduce stress levels). After that, we took a walk outside to simulate how fresh air and exercise can also be a stress reliever.
Homework - Students should come to my room to get a biodot before school sometime before February 22nd (the day of the assessment). They should record their color at different times throughout the day on the provided record sheet.
Objectives - Students will evaluate effective strategies for dealing with stress (Standard 1 Core Concepts), Students will demonstrate stress relief techniques (Standard 7 Self Management)
