Class Summary - Today we talked about the food groups. We brainstormed foods from each food group. We discussed that the USDA created rules for each food group so that we get the nutrient dense foods in each group most of the time. We discussed the grains group. The key rule for the grains group is to make half of your grains whole. We also talked about the vegetable group. The key rule for the vegetable group is to vary your veggies. This means to eat a variety of vegetables from all of the 5 different categories. Today we finished up talking about the food groups. The rule for the fruit group is to 'focus on fruit'. This means that we want to limit the amount of fruit juice we drink (even if it is 100% fruit juice) and eat the whole fruit. We also discussed the milk group. The rule for the milk group is to eat 'low fat and calcium rich' milk products. This means products that are made with skim or 1% milk. Flavored milks add calories to our 'extra calorie count'. In general, white cheese is lower fat than yellow cheese. The rule for the meat and beans group is to 'go lean with protein'. We want to choose lean options like lean cuts of meat and nuts and seeds. The oils rule is to 'limit' the amount of added oils we eat. Most of our oils should come from the foods we eat that follow the rules from the other food groups.
