Class Summary - Today we looked at why people use drugs and why people choose to stay away from drugs. We introduced a new vocabulary word, 'protective factors' which is the opposite of risk factors; it makes it more likely that someone would make a healthy decision. Then we brainstormed influences of drug use from peers / friends, technology, values / personal beliefs, life events, families, and personality traits. Students passed sheets where they brainstormed how the influences impacted someone's drug use and added if it was a protective or risk factor. Students then looked at the collection of answers and picked the most relevant one. FInally, we watched an episode of 'my kid would never' that showed students deciding if they would get into the car with someone who was influenced by alcohol and later marijuana. Students were asked to brainstorm why some students got into the car, even though they knew they shouldn't.
