Class Summary - Today we focused mostly on the details and structure of long bones. We identified each part of the long bone and the function. Attached is a diagram that the students used in class to identify the parts of long bones. We discussed the periosteum which is the membrane which covers bone. The epiphysis which is the ends of long bones (has spongy bone covered by compact bone and red bone marrow that performs hematopoisis - red blood cell production). The diaphysis is the middle portion of the bone. The diaphysis includes the medullary cavity which is a hollow space in the bone that holds yellow bone marrow which stores fats. The epipheseal plate is also known as the growth plate. There is hyaline cartilage called articular cartilage coating the ends of the bone where it would be at a joint.
